The Vocational Training Council (VTC) held the presentation ceremony of the Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Outstanding Students Award Scheme today (7 June) to recognise the outstanding performance of nine VTC students.

Donor of the Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Outstanding Students Award Scheme, Irene NG, encouraged the awarded students “I hope you will be driven by the scholarship to create a wholesome life for yourself, contribute to society and serve the world.” She also exhorted the students to make good use of the scholarship for broadening their international perspective and knowledge as well as raising their personal abilities.

This year students (See appendix for the awardee list) from different disciplines, who excelled in their areas of academic studies, extracurricular activities and community service, were each awarded a scholarship of HK$10,000.

Student of the Higher Diploma in Accountancy of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), Eric TAM, was the first ever student to win the scholarship twice. Eric was involved in a serious traffic accident when he was small, fracturing the bone in his right shin, which led to an operation. He spent one year in hiatus, away from school. The difficult recuperation process made him all the more treasure his life and learning opportunities. After sitting the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, he took the IVE Diploma of Foundation Studies (Business), and then progressed to the Higher Diploma in Accountancy. During his three years in IVE, Eric was awarded more than ten scholarships. As well as studying hard, he was keen to participate in extracurricular activites and community services, clocking 900 hours in volunteer work. A student excelling in both study and conduct, Eric has now under his belt six conditional offers from local and overseas universities and is well on the way to achieving his dream career of an accountant.

Hooked on conducting experiments, and with a special interest in microbiology and genetic studies, IVE student of Higher Diploma in Biotechnology, Kate HUNG vowed to be a scientific researcher. She has obtained a conditional offer from a local university, to study for a degree in biological science. Meanwhile another awardee, IVE student of the Higher Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management Calvin CHOI, has personally studied with the accreditation organisation for wine and liqeur Wine & Spirit Education Trust(WSET), achieving a level two certificate. He plans to proceed to a top-up degree programme in international hospitality and business management.

Founded by the late Dr NG Tat-lun in 2006, the Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Outstanding Students Award Scheme has benefitted many VTC students.
