Representing Hong Kong, 22 young skilled competitors departed this evening (10 October) for WorldSkills Competition 2017 to be held in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. They vowed to give their best performance against their elite peers from around the world.

Hailed the “Skills Olympics”, the four-day WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017 will be held between 15 and 18 October and has attracted over 1,300 young talents from around 60 countries and regions to compete in 51 skill competitions.

The Hong Kong competitors are prize winners at the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2016 jointly organised by the Vocational Training Council (VTC), the Construction Industry Council and the Clothing Industry Training Authority, and selected by experts for the WorldSkills Competition 2017.

The Hong Kong team will take part in 20 skill competitions, including: Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering - CAD, IT Software Solutions for Business, Print Media Technology, Web Design and Development, Electrical Installations, Mobile Robotics, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Fashion Technology, Cooking, Restaurant Service, Car Painting, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Graphic Design Technology, Visual Merchandising, Wall and Floor Tiling, Bricklaying, Painting and Decorating, and Joinery. Together, they will compete with their international peers in order to raise professional standards and learn best industry practice.

The opportunity to take part in the Competition is valuable as every participant can only join once in his/her life. A competitor in most skill competitions must not be older than 22 while participants with work experience (like in the sectors of Mechatronics and Aircraft Maintenance) must not be older than 25.

Hong Kong Team has won two Gold, one Silver, four Bronze prizes and 39 Medallions of Excellence since its first joining in 1997, a testimony to international recognition of the professional level and skills of our Hong Kong competitors. Fielding the largest ever team, Hong Kong will also take part in the highest number of competition trades this year. Every competitor has undergone rigorous training with their instructors in the previous year, hoping to achieve excellence for Hong Kong. The Hong Kong team will also be leading the largest-ever delegation to WorldSkills Abu Dhabi. There will be members including industry partners and government officials to support the competitors to perform their best in this international competition.
