Development of green transportation is the global trend in environmental protection. The Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), a member institution of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department have co-organised the “SOPHIE – IVE’s Solar Cars Driving the Future” Exhibition in which eco solar car technology is promoted through display of the solar car, SOPHIE, developed by students and teachers of the IVE Engineering Discipline. The sixth-generation SOPHIE VI hit the road for its first outing in Hong Kong yesterday (11 March) after achieving an outstanding result in the World Solar Challenge 2017 held in Australia last year where it showcased the learning outcomes and technological prowess of local young talent.

The Opening Ceremony of the “SOPHIE - IVE's Solar Cars Driving the Future” Exhibition (Please refer to Annex for details) held today (12 March) was officiated by Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Michelle LI; Museum Director of Hong Kong Science Museum, Paulina CHAN; VTC Executive Director, Carrie YAU, and Deputy Executive Director Dr Eric LIU.

Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Michelle LI said the SOPHIE project was of great significance as it not only put STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education into practice, but also dovetailed with the Government policy to leverage innovative technologies.

Addressing the audience, VTC Executive Director, Carrie YAU said “STEM education has become a global trend, which can strengthen students’ ability to integrate and apply knowledge and skills, foster their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills. The SOPHIE project is a shining example demonstrating how the hands-on, minds-on vocational and professional education and training(VPET) has groomed young professionals in STEM-related fields.”

Starting tomorrow, the six-month exhibition will be open to the public. Apart from the SOPHIE solar car and parts, video, life size units and interactive exhibits will be made available to demonstrate, in an all-round way, the eco-friendly and highly effective design of the SOPHIE solar car.

Meanwhile, SOPHIE VI travelled on the public road in Hong Kong for the first time yesterday (11 March) from IVE (Tsing Yi) to Hong Kong Science Museum for a brief exhibition. SOPHIE VI is now on display till 14 March. This roadshow drive was the first time for SOPHIE VI to travel on the public road in Hong Kong. The journey was broadcast li ve to the public through the SOPHIE Facebook Page, enabling viewers to feel like they were driving a solar car.

The Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) is a member of the VTC Group. The 9 IVE campuses are located across the territory. Together they provide vocational education for secondary graduates as well as people in employment. IVE courses leading to the award of higher diploma and Diploma of Foundation Studies cover various academic disciplines including Applied Science; Business Administration; Childcare, Elderly and Community Services; Design; Information Technology; Engineering; as well as Hotel, Service and Tourism Studies.
