The Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee) will be holding their highly-regarded annual design exhibition from 13 to 23 June at the campus of HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee). This year’s exhibition, titled “Emerging Design Talents 2018: CHANCE” will extend beyond the campus to numerous other spots, allowing both the public and the design industry to appreciate the creative works of the two institutes’ graduates and students.

The world is rapidly changing as a result of the confluence of globalisation and technological advancement. Amidst this change, designers constantly have to look for chances to communicate through creativity and design. HKDI & IVE (LWL) aim to provide a platform for changes to Hong Kong’s next generation of designers through innovative programmes and a springboard to connect them with the world. A fine selection of student works will be displayed in the shows from various design areas including Visual Arts & Culture, Transmedia, Film and TV, Visual Communications, Fashion Design, Architectural Design, Products, Interior and Exhibition Design, Landscape Architecture, and Information Technology while a series of creative exhibitions will also be held during Emerging Design Talents 2018: CHANCE.

    Breakthrough Designs with Great Diversity
Creativity can be fabulous and diverse. From fashion design to architectural styles, countless variations are possible. For instance, graduates of the Higher Diploma in Fashion Image Design NG Ka-man and LUI Kam-chi were inspired by the folk-style fashion trend and have created “Catastasis”, which showcases the unique art value of Tibetan drama culture. Meanwhile, graduate of the Higher Diploma in Landscape Architecture LAW Tsz-him has made a breakthrough in architectural design by thinking out of the box. By taking the natural soundscape into consideration as well as the visual effect, he has turned Shing Mun Riverside into a healing musical park.

    Thought-Provoking Designs
This year’s student works not only showcase their unique creativity and talents, but also reflect their concerns towards culture and youth. Five graduates of the Higher Diploma in Transmedia have created a micro-film called “Rest·Inflexion” to encourage the audience to learn more about Hong Kong’s independent music scene and development, complementing the film with a series of social media promotions and concerts. They hope more people can discover the diversity of Hong Kong music and raise their awareness and support of independent music. Graduate of the Higher Diploma in Visual Arts and Culture, YEUNG Yin-ting, came up with a behavioural art project “Pandora’s Traps” after observing how easily privacy is disclosed under recent technological developments. In her project, photos of participants are shredded into pieces, then an old-fashioned TV displays how an artist can put all the shredded pieces back together, portraying the prevalence of network surveillance in today’s society.

    A Trip to Evoke Inspirations
As in previous years, as part of its “HKDI Elite Students Program”, HKDI has this year selected 12 students to participate in a tailor-made overseas learning programme, so they can enrich their graduation projects with innovative design ideas. Three students of the Higher Diploma in Film and TV went to Taiwan with their programme instructors. Besides participating in the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, they attended a movie forum to which emerging directors from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan were invited, as well as experienced filmmakers Sylvia CHANG Ai-chia, Eric TSANG Chi-wai, Teddy Robin and more. Students had the chance to understand the challenges faced by emerging directors and take a closer look at the movie world in the 1980s. This experience has helped the students create distinctive movie plots, which will be displayed in this annual design show. One of the movies is about four young men choosing the path of singing Cantonese songs in the 1960s to show their support for Cantonese culture.

The opening ceremony of Emerging Design Talents 2018: CHANCE, together with the Revolutionary Image of the New Generation image show, will be held at 7:30pm on 13 June 2018 at HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee). Below are some of the highlights:

The Revolutionary Image of the New Generation & The New Fashion Force
“The Revolutionary Image of the New Generation” features a series of wearable artworks and revolutionary make-up styling, hair styling, fashion styling and stage costumes, producing stunning effects. Its aim is to show the industry that these talented young designers are bringing a new era to fashion, film and performance art. Local fashion celebrity Hilary TSUI and renowned image consultant Tina LIU will be joining forces to select the award winner. Meanwhile, in “The New Fashion Force”, 30 of the best fashion and accessories collections selected from those of more than 200 fashion design graduates in different specialisms (Menswear, Knitwear, Accessories and Textiles) will be presented by professional models.

Dai Lung Fung – Film Show 2018
The Dai Lung Fung – Film Show 2018 will present six remarkable pieces selected from graduation projects to show the public and guests of honour, including renowned professionals from film, broadcasting and creative industries. The aim of the show is to provide a platform for Film and TV graduates to showcase their uniqueness, creativity and passion.

    Music in Motion 2018
The Music in Motion concert provides a stage for students of the Higher Diploma in Digital Music and Media programme and the top-up degree programme collaborated with Coventry University to show their talents by presenting original compositions in a rousing live music performance. “[FORM/SHIFT] HKDI x UOL Architecture Design Graduation Exhibition 2018”
This year’s Architecture Design Graduation Exhibition will take place in Comix Home Base in Wan Chai from 22 to 24 June with the theme [FORM/SHIFT]. FORM presents existence. Form can stay, form can melt. Form can repel, form can merge. Form can SHIFT. Shift leads to a new form and eventually a new existence. [FORM / SHIFT] is an exhibition that showcases a full spectrum of the students’ design work, turning a new page on the architectural education and design scene of Hong Kong.
