The renowned University of Warwick, UK, held the WMG Graduation Ceremony 2019 in Hong Kong last Saturday (11 May) to mark the conferring of Master’s degrees and sub-qualifications on 48 graduates from Hong Kong and the Mainland. Presentation of Industrial Fellowship to Dr Daniel YIP, a distinguished industrialist, was also conducted at the ceremony to recognise his outstanding and continuous contributions to the academic and industrial sectors.

The ceremony was officiated by Professor David MULLINS, Interim Head of Department, WMG, The University of Warwick, who also presented award certificates to the graduates.

This year, 30 students from the Programme and Project Management, International Technology Management, and Service Management and Design programmes were conferred Master’s degrees or sub-qualifications by the University having completed study at the WMG School for Professional Development (the WMG School), jointly established by the Vocational Training Council (VTC) and The University of Warwick. A further cohort of 18 graduates from other regions also attended the ceremony.

Industrial Fellowship was conferred at the ceremony as well. Dr Daniel YIP, Managing Director of G.E.W. International Corporation Limited, was re-appointed by The University of Warwick as Industrial Fellow for the third time in recognition of his outstanding and continuous contributions to the academic and industrial sectors.

To encourage students to strive relentlessly, WMG School Scholarship is open for graduates from local and overseas universities who have obtained first-class honours degrees in their undergraduate studies, or achieved outstanding and recognised accomplishments in their professions. This year, two students, Charlie LAW and Calvin CHAN, have been awarded the WMG School Scholarship.

Echoing the transformation to a knowledge-based society and the call for lifelong learning, the WMG School offers Master’s degree programmes in Programme and Project Management as well as Service Management and Design. The Programme and Project Management programme encompasses project planning, management and control, project financial management, human resources management and change management, to nurture talent with interdisciplinary and management knowledge. On the other hand, the Service Management and Design programme emphasises the latest developments in the professional areas of systems, processes, technology design and management, and assists students in enhancing their competitiveness in the market.

One of the features of the WMG programmes is that The University of Warwick sends its teaching staff from the UK to deliver the modules of the programmes at VTC. The programmes also provide students with an opportunity to attend one to two modules on the campus of The University of Warwick in the UK or other WMG partner universities in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Cyprus with no additional tuition fee. The pedagogical approach consists of face-to-face lectures, exchanges with industry veterans, and case studies that combine theory and practice. Students might choose to complete the MSc programme in one-year full-time mode or two-to-three-year part-time mode.

Established in 1982, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) is the largest vocational and professional education and training provider in Hong Kong. The mission of VTC is to provide a valued choice to school leavers and working people to acquire the values, knowledge and skills for lifelong learning and enhanced employability, and also to provide support to industries for their manpower development. VTC has 13 member institutions, namely the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), the Institute of Professional Education And Knowledge (PEAK), the School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE), the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), the Hotel and Tourism Institute (HTI), the Chinese Culinary Institute (CCI), the International Culinary Institute (ICI), the Maritime Services Training Institute (MSTI), Youth College, Pro-Act by VTC, the Integrated Vocational Development Centre (IVDC) and the Shine Skills Centre.
