The Vocational Training Council (VTC) held the presentation ceremony for the Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Outstanding Students Award Scheme today (28 May) to recognise the outstanding performance of nine VTC students in academic results, community service and whole person development. They were encouraged to continue to study hard and realise their potential to contribute to society.

Addressing the audience, Donor to the Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Outstanding Students Award Scheme, Dr Carrie WILLIS encouraged the awarded students to put the scholarship and their varied learning opportunities in VTC to good use. They could extend their knowledge domains and seek to understand the latest market developments across different parts of the world and strengthen competitiveness. She hoped the awardees would make good attempts at innovative thinking in their professional field and become a leader in the industry.

This year students (See appendix for the awardee list) from different disciplines, who excelled in their areas of academic studies, extracurricular activities and community service, were each awarded a scholarship of HK$10,000.

One of the awardees is Andy TANG Kai-shing, who is studying the Higher Diploma in Aviation with the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE). The parents, elder sister and uncle of Andy are all working in the airport, in posts ranging from ground handling to air traffic control. Under the tutelage of relatives, he has vowed to be a pilot since he was small. In his spare time, Andy would study books related to aviation and craft airplane models. His family is supportive of his pilot dream, so that they specially installed simulated flight software and aircraft steer at home for Andy when he was in secondary school. This was to familiarise him with the key procedures of flying a civil aircraft, in getting prepared to be a pilot.

Andy is hooked on sports. He was offered a UGC-funded university place after obtaining the results of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, to pursue a bachelor’s degree in sports and recreation management. Bent on his pilot dream, he passed up the degree place for the IVE Higher Diploma in Aviation. During his IVE study, internship for him was arranged with a ground service company in the airport, taking records of air cargo and passenger luggage. Upon graduation from IVE, he would further his studies in Australia with RMIT University in an aviation related bachelor’s degree programme, to follow his flying dream.

Another awardee, Edelweiss CHEUNG Tsz-yui, studying for the Higher Diploma in Landscape Architecture, comes from the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI). In her secondary school years, Edelweiss was given a number of opportunities to learn about planning of public spaces in which she had gradually developed an interest. When she was studying in HKDI, she took part in and won many competitions in planning public spaces, like beautifying tunnels and designing containers. Edelweiss has already been given a conditional offer by the Department of Landscape Architecture of Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. With the vision of being a landscape architect, she will go there this September for further studies, hoping that she will be able to improve the community environment through re-designing the public spaces of Hong Kong.

Founded by the late Dr NG Tat-lun in 2006, the Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Outstanding Students Award Scheme has benefitted many VTC students. Apart from honouring outstanding academic achievements of students, the Scheme also aims at encouraging students to make gainful use of the diversified learning opportunities available and actively take part in extracurricular activities to expand their realms of knowledge. The students are also encouraged to realise their potential and contribute to society.
