    To enable young people to flex their skills benefited from vocational and professional education and training, 2016 WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition to be held between next June and July invites applications starting December. Winners of the competition may have the opportunity to represent Hong Kong in the WorldSkills Competition to be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in October 2017.
     

    2016 WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition covers 26 trades subsumed under the 6 categories of Transportation and Logistics, Construction and Building Technology, Manufacturing and Engineering Technology, Information and Communications Technology, Creative Arts and Fashion as well as Personal and Social Services. Comprising representatives from the Vocational Training Council (VTC), the Construction Industry Council and the Clothing Industry Training Authority, the Standing Committee on Youth Skills Competition organise the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition biennially. First held in 1996 aiming to promote skills excellence and showcase the talent of young tradesmen, the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition is committed to providing a platform for young people aged 21 or below to advance their professional skills.
     

    Outstanding entrants may be given intensive training and selected as finalists to represent Hong Kong to compete in the biennial WorldSkills Competition to be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in October 2017, which is also known as the “Skill Olympics”. The last competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil this August saw more than 1,000 young professionals from 59 countries and regions participating in the event. Competitors from Hong Kong won 7 Medallions for Excellence respectively in the IT Software Solutions for Business, Mechatronics, Graphic Design Technology, Visual Merchandising and Window Dressing, Beauty Therapy, Hairdressing and Wall and Floor Tiling categories. LAW Ming-fai, the graduate from Higher Diploma in Software Engineering of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), competed in the IT Software Solutions for Business trade and was also named the best Hong Kong competitor for his well-honed skills in 2015 WorldSkills Competition. 
     

    Since first participating in 1997, the Hong Kong Team has won two Golds, one Silver, four Bronze and 39 Medallions for Excellence, well attesting to the world class standard of Hong Kong competitors.
     
    Hong Kong permanent residents born on or after 1 January 1995 possessing relevant working experience or knowledge of respective skills are eligible to apply for the 2016 WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition. Some trades may have specific requirements. Application form is available at VTC, the Construction Industry Council and the Clothing Industry Training Authority or can be downloaded at www.worldskillshongkong.org Deadline for application is 31 January 2016.
