Fashion design students of the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) and the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), member institutions of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), shone through the 8th International Footwear Design Competition 2016 and the 16th Footwear Design Competition Hong Kong 2016 sweeping a total of eight awards, including the championship and gold prize of the two competitions respectively. Among them, one THEi student made use of advanced 3D printing technology to come up with unique and chic designs.

Beating over 100 designers from different countries and regions of Asia, THEi Bachelor of Arts (Honours) student in Fashion Design, Jessica ZHENG Bi-rong, won First prize in the Lady’s Boot Category and was crowned Sabatina Awards Gold (Overall Champion) of the 8th International Footwear Design Competition with her shoe design entitled “Miao Woman”. Jessica has always been keen to incorporate the diversity of Chinese culture in her design, and on this occasion visited a Miao village in Guizhou alone for five days to draw inspiration. After studying the Miao culture and women's costumes, she applied the traditional Miao embroidery techniques to her lady's boot design, decorating the boots with a handcrafted flower worn by Miao women as an everyday accessory. “My boot design is modelled on and adapted from the wedding costume of the Miao clan," Jessica explained. "The main motif of the boots, animal patterns combining the dragon, qilin and phoenix, symbolises prosperity and marital bliss.” She said she was thrilled to have won an international competition for the first time, which had boosted her confidence in pursuing a career in fashion and footwear design. She received a total scholarship of USD 7,000 for her studies.

Meanwhile LAM Sze-sze, a Year Three student of the same programme, won the Gold Award in the Design & Make Collection DIY category of the 16th Footwear Design Competition with her creative design entitled “Harp”, inspired by the musical instrument and its elegant strings. “The heels of the shoes are crafted in the shape of a harp while the body is adorned with string-like gold chains, rendering the whole design luxurious and elegant,” Sze-sze said, adding that she felt exhilarated at earning such a good result for the first time in an open design competition. She was grateful to the institute for arranging attachment training for her to acquire real workplace experience, as well as learning advanced footwear design techniques and the latest industry know-how.

Sze-sze made good use of the latest 3D printing technology by first using the computer software to create a 3D model, then printing out the heels in their entirety at full-scale size. In the past, a shoe mould had to be made first, based on the parts to be produced, a very time-consuming and complicated process. The end products this time are also more refined and life-like.

A number of other HKDI students or graduates of the Higher Diploma in Fashion Design programme also won prizes at the 16th Footwear Design Competition Hong Kong 2016, including a Bronze Award in the Design & Make Collection DIY category, Silver and Bronze Awards for Men's Shoes Collection, a Bronze Award for Children’s Shoes Collection and an Online Champion,.

Organised by the Confederation of International Footwear Conference, the 8th International Footwear Design Competition 2016 provided a platform for original designs and budding designers. This year 148 entries were received from different countries and regions in Asia.

The 16th Footwear Design Competition Hong Kong 2016, recognised as a signature event of the industry and the cradle for nurturing footwear design talents, was organised by the Federation of Hong Kong Footwear Limited and supported by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. This year over 800 entries were received. Winners were selected based on creativity, fashion aesthetics and producibility.
