Hong Kong contestants shine in Guangzhou/Hong Kong/Macao/Chengdu Youth Skills Competition 2016
LAU Wai-yin, graduate of the Diploma of Vocational Education (Beauty Care), won the gold prize in the Beauty Therapy trade contest, which evaluated techniques in the areas of facial care, banquet makeup and body painting. Prior to the competition, Wai-yin practised for nine hours every day, six days a week, which greatly enhanced her professional skills. Her steady performance on the day also earned her the award for the best Hong Kong competitor. Thrilled by the good result, Wai-yin plans to extend her studies to develop her career in the industry. Graduates of the same programme, MAK Wing-yan and Kathleen LING, were both awarded silver prizes. They found the painting part the most challenging as competitors were required to work out make-up for the model according to the sample provided by the organiser, a test to their professional skills as well as their concentration.
Meanwhile HKDI students of the Higher Diploma in Exhibition Design, LUNG Chi-sing, CHUNG Wai-han and LEE Po-shan, won the silver prize in the team-based Visual Merchandising/Window Dressing trade contest. The theme this year was design for a sports drink and a window dressing showcase. The HKDI students made use of red and yellow colours that symbolised a sports ground and life energy respectively to create a layered geometric pattern in the window display, evoking a sense of vitality and fashion that earned commendation from the judges.
Last but not least, IVE student of the Higher Diploma in Software Engineering, LAU Ka-po, won a merit prize in the Web Design trade category. He applied his knowledge of writing and designing programmes for web pages to developing a multi-functional web page for a university student union. Ka-po was delighted to have the opportunity to compare notes and exchange knowledge with peers from the other three cities and found the experience memorable.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, VTC Executive Director Carrie YAU said “This competition provides an effective platform for young people of the four areas to excel in their skills and further the exchange of knowledge and know-how of the four regions.”
Jointly organised by the VTC, Guangzhou Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, Macao SAR Labour Affairs Bureau and Chengdu Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, the GHMC Youth Skills Competition is organised biennially in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao and Chengdu on a rotation basis. This year's ninth edition featured contests in five trades, namely Beauty Therapy, Information Network Cabling, Mobile Robotics, Web Design, and Visual Merchandising/Window Dressing. Most of the Hong Kong competitors were earlier winners of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition, while others were talented young workers from the industries concerned, handpicked by experts. All of them received further training to prepare for the GHMC Youth Skills Competition.
Established in 1982, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) is the largest vocational and professional education and training provider in Hong Kong with some 250,000 students and trainees each year.
