The Vocational Training Council (VTC) will play host to the two-day Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) International Conference 2017, WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2017 in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 16 June (Friday). In celebration of the VTC 35th Anniversary, the event is also a designated celebration event for the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR. The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival will be open to the public, free of charge, enabling members of the public to experience in person the relevance of skills in everyday life and better understand the values of Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET). Themed “Skills for Better Lives”, the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2017 is the biggest and the most prominent skills event in Hong Kong. Jointly organised by VTC, the Construction Industry Council and the Clothing Industry Training Authority and supported by the Education Bureau, young competitors from a dozen countries and regions will take part in 12 trade competitions to showcase the excellence of their skills including beauty therapy, cooking, mobile robotics, wall tiling and visual merchandising. For the cooking competition, contestants will be required to prepare three dishes on the spot with ingredients provided by the organiser. Competitors will be tested on their culinary skills and responsiveness. For the mobile robotics trade, contestants are required to assemble the parts and write up the programme needed to create a robot capable of completing designated motions and tasks automatically. Outstanding Hong Kong competitors may be selected to represent Hong Kong in the Abu Dhabi WorldSkills 2017 to be held in The United Arab Emirates in October this year. As well as taking a close look at the trade competitions, visitors can get to know more about VPET through 30 and more fun-filled activities like assembling a solar-powered mini model car, using the traditional Chinese teapot with a long spout to pour out the eight treasure tea, trying out vegetable and fruit carving and body painting and employing Virtual Reality (VR) technologies to design fashion with a unique style. A series of “Meet Skills Stars” talks will be held concurrently in which various industry experts will share practical tips for enriching everyday life and entry into different professions. At the “Showcase on Secondary Students’ Skills”, students from secondary schools will undergo school-version skills competitions, demonstrate their works and provide try-a-skill activities including cake decoration, hands-on experiences in robot design and assembling, and a Construct-a-Catapult competition for junior secondary students. Jointly organised by VTC and the Education Bureau, the VPET International Conference 2017 provides a platform for education and VPET leaders from a dozen countries to share the latest development and trends in VPET. Tertiary students of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines from countries like Australia, Finland, the USA and Japan will put their heads together with VTC students in the International STEM Students’ Forum 2017 held in tandem to share experiences and learning outcomes from conducting joint STEM projects. The projects include an intelligent bus shelter illustrating a possible future for efficient urban transportation, a survey on the inclusion of the nutrition and health claims on selected pre-packaged food products, and a study on the characteristics of bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacteria. Highlights also include a STEM students’ chat with executives and STEM education development discussion on project learning outcomes that inspire new thinking.
