    VPET International Conference,
    WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2017
    Skills tournament gathering international elites for exposition

    The Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) International Conference, WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2017, the biggest event in Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) in Hong Kong, commenced today (16 June) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, and will run for two days. The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2017 is open to the public free of charge. Visitors can observe onsite, skills competitions, take part in the Try-a-Skill activities and attend talks delivered by experts.

    CY Leung, Chief Executive, HKSAR, officiated at the opening ceremony and launched the event together with TANG Tao, Vice Minister, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, The People’s Republic of China; Dr TAN Tie-niu, Deputy Director, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong; Datuk Dr Mary YAP Kain Ching, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia; Dr Sophon NAPATHORN, Vice Minister for Education, Ministry of Education, Thailand; WANG Yang-nan, Deputy Director General, Department of Vocational Education and Adult Education, Ministry of Education, The People’s Republic of China; Eddie NG Hak-kim, Secretary for Education, Education Bureau, The Government of the HKSAR; Herman HUI Chung-shing, Chairman, Standing Committee on Youth Skills Competition of Hong Kong; CHAN Ka-kui, Chairman, Construction Industry Council, and Dr Clement CHEN, Chairman, Vocational Training Council (VTC). Following the opening ceremony, the Chief Executive toured the venue of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and performed the gong hitting ceremony for the Visual Merchandising Competition.

    The event is a celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the VTC, and is also a designated celebration event for the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2017 is jointly organised by the VTC, Construction Industry Council, Clothing Industry Training Authority and supported by the Education Bureau. Members of the public can observe at close quarters how young competitors from different countries and regions participate in the 12 trade competitions to showcase the excellence of their skills in areas such as beauty therapy, mobile robotics and electrical installations. Outstanding Hong Kong competitors may be selected to represent Hong Kong in the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017 to be held in The United Arab Emirates in October this year.

    Visitors can also take part in the 30 and more fun-filled Try-a-Skill activities, like assembling a solar-powered mini model car, using the traditional Chinese teapot with a long spout to pour out the eight treasure tea, trying out vegetable and fruit carving, body painting and employing Virtual Reality (VR) technologies to design fashion in a unique style. They will experience what is meant by “Skills for Better Lives” as suggested by the theme of the event and get to know more about VPET.

    A series of “Meet Skills Stars” talks are being held concurrently in which various industry experts share practical tips on how to enrich everyday life and enter into different professions. At the “Showcase on Secondary Students’ Skills”, students from secondary schools will take part in school-version skills competitions, demonstrate their works and provide try-a-skill activities including cake decoration, hands-on experiences in robot design and assembling, and a Construct-a-Catapult competition for junior secondary students.

    Jointly organised by the VTC and the Education Bureau, the VPET International Conference 2017, adopting the theme of “Partnership, Enterprise and Innovation”, provides a platform for education and VPET leaders from different countries and regions, including experts from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and UNESCO, to share the latest developments and trends in VPET the world over. At the Government Leaders’ Roundtable, education officials from Malaysia, Thailand and the Mainland, along with HKSAR Secretary for Education, Eddie NG Hak-kim, will be sharing insights and ideas on the development of VPET in the global arena.

    Tertiary students of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines from countries like Australia, Finland, the United States and Japan are putting their heads together with VTC students in the International STEM Students’ Forum 2017, held in tandem, to share experiences and learning outcomes from conducting joint STEM projects. The projects include an intelligent bus shelter illustrating a possible future for efficient urban transportation, a survey on the inclusion of the nutrition and health claims on selected pre-packaged food products, and a study on the characteristics of bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacteria. Highlights also include a STEM students’ chat with executives and a STEM education development discussion on project learning outcomes that inspire new thinking.

    About The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition
    In Hong Kong, Skills Competitions are organised by The Standing Committee on Youth Skills Competition, comprising representatives from the VTC, Construction Industry Council, Clothing Industry Training Authority and elites from industries, which has been actively promoting the importance of skills and organising various local and international skills competition to select suitable talents to participate in the WorldSkills Competitions.

    About the Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) International Conference 2017
    The VPET International Conference, also known as the“VPET Connex 2017”, is jointly organised by the Education Bureau of The HKSAR Government and the VTC. VPET Connex 2017 aims to bring leaders, policy makers and practitioners in VPET from around the world together to share best practice and strengthen collaboration among VPET partners and institutions.
