Bringing together world-class visionaries and innovators, HKDI Gallery has curated a programme that crosses various design disciplines, from multimedia and interaction design, to landscape architecture and urban development, costume design and art direction. The exhibitions will be rolled out in early October, starting with “Interactive and Playful – Swiss Design from Zurich University of the Arts”, which will take place from 6 October, 2018 to 27 January, 2019, to be followed shortly by “Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec – Urban Daydreaming” from 27 October, 2018 to 17 February, 2019. Finally, it will be concluded by “Tim Yip: Blue – Art, Costumes and Memory” between 17 November, 2018 and 31 March, 2019. “We are extremely excited about this year’s exhibition line-up,” says Dr Lay Lian ONG, Principal of HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee). “Not only do the exhibitions represent an extension of our diversified academic programmes, they are also a platform for us to engage with the wider public, to raise interest and arouse discussion about the importance of design in our lives." Interactive and Playful – Swiss Design from Zurich University of the Arts “Interactive and Playful – Swiss Design from Zurich University of the Arts” is a celebration of the partnership between HKDI and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). To be held at the Experience Centre of HKDI, this exhibition showcases a selection of distinctive bachelor’s, master’s and research projects from the seven subject areas offered by the design school, namely Cast / Audiovisual Media; Game Design; Industrial Design; Interaction Design; Knowledge Visualisation; Trends & Identity; and Visual Communication. The projects reflect the notion of design, how design is understood and taught today, and how this knowledge can contribute to social and technological innovations. Addressing experiences, emotions and senses, ZHdK students demonstrate a breakthrough of design from merely being physical objects and spaces. Through this multimedia exhibition, visitors will be surrounded by immersive media and interactive intelligent objects that transcend purely technical functions or fashionable qualities, as design was once perceived to be. “Interactive and Playful – Swiss Design from Zurich University of the Arts” will present 10 recent outstanding projects by ZHdK students and graduates, including works on industrial design, visual communication, sensory explorations, and interactive installations. Crafting great narratives to tell stories about everyday life, with an emphasis on the social, experiential and conceptual, the young designers drew inspiration from the digitalisation of design and channelled their creativity in both playful and serious ways. Highlights from the show include the interactive kinetic light installation “Through Momentum”; “Titan Arum”, an interactive installation of the extremely rare moment of the blooming of the largest flower in the world; and “Smell Forward”, a fictional exploration of the scents of the past, present and future. Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec – Urban Daydreaming From 27 October, HKDI Gallery is honoured to showcase a collection of urban development scenarios in the Asian debut of the “Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec – Urban Daydreaming” exhibition. It is an exhibition of the Vitra Design Museum in cooperation with Les Champs Libres in Rennes. One of the most internationally sought-after designers of the decade, the BOUROULLEC brothers have been lauded by prestigious accolades in design, including the Wallpaper* Design Award 2016’s Designer of the Year, where they became one of the judging panellists of the elite award in 2017. Featuring 20 sets of research models and animations conceived by the world-renowned French design duo Ronan and Erwan BOUROULLEC, “Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec – Urban Daydreaming” is a wide-ranging study of possible urban development solutions for cities that may be imagined in very different urban settings. 14 proposals were selected for exhibition after extended periods of research. Each of the proposal explores different ways to incorporate nature into urban spaces. Through thought-provoking and immersive staging, viewers are transported into separate acts of an urban play. Each proposal takes into consideration the needs of urban environments by reintroducing greenery, animals, water and fire into the city. Marking the first time the brothers have worked on an urban development project, the exhibition will explore a wide range of possible environmental solutions through detailed case studies that reimagine the relationship between buildings, quality of pavements, positioning of fountains, and planting of a jungle. Highlights of this exhibition include “Clouds”, a half-pergola, half-vegetal shelter that doubles as a floating garden; “Pergola”, a depiction of vegetation forming a shaded pathway; and “Platforms”, a multi-purpose structure as pedestals or large collective benches. Capturing the evolution of his artistic journey, the show will bring to life Tim YIP’s multidisciplinary works, and his collaborations with some of the world’s best filmmakers. From iconic costume designs, to photography and films which illustrate his aesthetic concepts and cultural interpretations, visitors will have a rare glimpse into his legendary career that spans over the past three decades.
