WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2019 opens for application
Strive for WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai

To offer young people a prominent chance to flex the skills, invitations are now being invited for the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2019 to be held this October. Winners of the competition could have the opportunity to represent Hong Kong in the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2020, the 11th Guangzhou/Hong Kong/Macao/Chengdu Youth Skills Competition and the 46th WorldSkills Competition to be held in Shanghai in 2021, stepping into the international skills arena.

The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2019 covers 30 trades (please see annex), grouped under the six categories of Construction and Building Technology, Creative Arts and Fashion, Information and Communication Technology, Manufacturing and Engineering Technology, Social and Personal Services, and Transportation and Logistics. Two new trades are being added this year to groom information technology (IT) talent in the new age, namely Cyber Security and Game Level Programming.

For example, competitors in the Cyber Security trade will be required to perform the role of a network and system administrator or security engineer to set up an IT infrastructure with proper configurations, such that the infrastructure will be  protected from hacker attack. For incident response and investigation, digital forensic analysis will be undertaken. Moreover, competitors will also act in the role of hackers to identify vulnerabilities in the server, write scripts for hacking the system and gain administrator access. These stringent competition requirements are akin to the actual job requirements of today’s professionals in the cyber security industry, who sometimes need to assume the role of an ethical hacker or practitioner performing penetration tests. In this way, contestants are trained into experts who can rise to the threats posed by cyber attacks.

Organised by the Vocational Training Council (VTC), the Construction Industry Council and the Clothing Industry Training Authority, the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition is committed to providing a platform for young people aged 20 or below to compare notes and exchange ideas with peers, as well as encourage them to develop their strengths and contribute to society. The competition will be held between October and November this year and the deadline for application is 31 May.

Outstanding competitors may be given further intensive training as necessary and represent Hong Kong to compete in the 46th WorldSkills Competition to be held in Shanghai in 2021, a biennial competition which is also known as the “Skills Olympics”. The 45th WorldSkills Competition will be held this August in Kazan, Russia and Hong Kong team will take part in around 20 trades of the competition. Since Hong Kong first joined the event in 1997, the Hong Kong Team has won two Gold, one Silver and five Bronze medals, as well as 46 Medallions for Excellence.

Hong Kong permanent residents possessing relevant work experience or knowledge of respective skills born on or after 1 January 1999 (or 1 January 1996 for those who compete in Mechatronics) are eligible to apply for the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2019. Application forms are available from VTC, the Construction Industry Council and the Clothing Industry Training Authority, or can be downloaded from the website below. Different trades may have specific closing and competition dates; please refer to the official website for more details. Enquiries should be directed to:
