    Young outstanding apprentices honoured

The Committee on Apprenticeship and Trade Testing of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) held the 2012 Outstanding Apprentice/Trainee Award Presentation Ceremony yesterday (20 March) in recognition of the excellent performance of apprentices. Awards were presented to 12 outstanding apprentices and 18 apprentices of excellent performance.

Awardees came from different industries including electrical engineering, construction, automobile, printing and building services. Two apprentices were presented the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Outstanding Apprentice Awards with a cash prize of HK$5,000. The 10 outstanding apprentices took part in an exchange tour to Singapore early this month. They were arranged to visit the Institute of Technical Education College Central, BCA Academy and a top-notch hair and image salon. The apprentices found the trip an eye opener that enabled them to understand the vocational education and training system of Singapore.

Marco WU, Chairman of the Hong Kong Housing Society, officiated at the ceremony and said the apprenticeship scheme provided both theoretical and practical training for young people to pursue recognised qualifications alongside their job.

The apprenticeship scheme is steered by the Pro-Act by VTC. Addressing the audience, WONG Kit-loong, Chairman of the VTC Committee on Apprenticeship and Trade Testing, said the apprenticeship scheme provided stable manpower for the industry. Of the 2012 apprenticeship graduates, over 95% stayed in the industry and nearly 85% among them stayed with their current employers.
