Emerging Design Talents 2016 graduation show is a feast for the senses

Offering a thrilling spectacle incorporating poetry, technology, fashion, music, film and multimedia, the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) annual design show will provide a stage for student creativity when it takes place from 16 to 26 June 2016.

‘Emerging Design Talents 2016: Poetry’ presents an opportunity for both students and audiences to reflect on the relationship between poetry, technology and theory. Highlighting the integration of technology and imagination, a Morse code theme has been adopted as the major design element this year. Supported by the advancement of technology, students’ ideas have been realised to enable their dedication and passion to shine through.

The exhibition takes place in HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee) from 16 to 26 June 2016. Admission is free.

This year, graduates have created works of extraordinary imagination based around various social and philosophical issues. Among the impressive shows, New Fashion Force is a not-to-be-missed showcase of 30 of the best fashion and accessory collections from over 200 fashion design graduates, where the public will be able see cutting edge designs and the passion of home-grown designers in between the fabrics and stitches. The Revolutionary Image of The New Generation displays a series of wearable artworks combining fashion, make-up, hair styling and stage costume to offer a visual sensation.

Another highlight of the event is Music in Motion with the theme ‘Start Fresh, Move On’ which aims to encourage students to move on in pursuit of a bigger dream. Local indie band PHOON together with the star alumni and graduating students of the Higher Diploma in Digital Music and Media programme will perform during the live music show, with original songs composed by the graduating students to be featured. As a significant event gathering emerging music talents, the show is expected to kick-start a new wave of local music.

‘Emerging Design Talents 2016: Poetry’ is an annual gala comprising exhibitions, fashion and styling shows, concerts, a multimedia show and micro-film screening. The opening ceremony will be held at 7:15pm on 16 June 2016 at HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee), with Eric YIM, VTC Deputy Chairman-cum-Chairman of Hong Kong Design Centre as the officiating guest.

A fine selection of student works from various design disciplines will be presented at the exhibition, including Visual Arts and Culture, Advertising Design, Creative Media, Digital Music and Media, Film and Television, Publication Design and Print Media, Transmedia, Visual Communication, Fashion Branding and Buying, Fashion Design, Fashion Image Design, Architectural Design, Furniture and Lifestyle Product Design, Jewellery and Image Product Design, Jewellery Design and Technology, Landscape Architecture, Product Design, Interior Design, Exhibition Design, Stage and Set Design, Information Technology and more.

In addition, HKDI will hold a series of exhibitions outside the campus and invites the public to engage in the dialogue. The exhibitions will take place in various locations including PopCorn in Tseung Kwan O, Comix Home Base in Wan Chai and Cityplaza in Tai Koo.

After years of planning, the soft launch of HKDI Centre of Innovative Material and Technology (CIMT) will also be scheduled on the opening day of ‘Emerging Design Talents 2016: Poetry’ on 16 June 2016. CIMT is designed to serve all design disciplines from interior design/construction materials to advanced fabrics, allowing inter-disciplinary design activities and knowledge exchange through multi-material applications. It also acts as a platform for knowledge exchange for design, innovative processes and materiality, dedicated to higher education and creative professionals.
