The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), a VTC member institution, showcased 12 outstanding student collections at THEi Fashion Show 2016, held today (5 July) during the Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer. The show saw graduates competing for major prizes including Overall Winner, First and Second Runners-up and the Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association (HKFDA) Creativity Award. Winners were handpicked by a judging panel formed of fashion industry professionals. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the show was held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Around 300 leading fashion industry representatives, including manufacturers, designers and the media, attended the graduating show of the first cohort of THEi’s students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Fashion Design. Current graduate CHOI Yui-shing won both the Overall Winner prize and the HKFDA Creativity Award with his six-piece collection ‘Untitled #1’, inspired by the idealised female body shape. With a glamorous black theme, the collection combined exotic textiles including sequined fabric, faux fur and velvet to highlight women’s natural elegance. Yui-shing was thrilled by the prizes, stressing that THEi’s four-year fashion design programme had taught him how to strike a balance between creativity and commercial viability, which spurred him to create innovative yet practical outfits. He said, “Apart from teaching professional knowledge, THEi also arranged many overseas exchanges for students, such as a UK workshop on handcrafting shoes, that put classroom learning to practical use and helped deepen what had been learnt.” Yui-shing was awarded round-trip tickets worth HK$28,000 sponsored by Hong Kong Airlines and a cash prize of HK$8,000. He said he would use the round-trip tickets to travel with his family, to thank them for the support they had shown during his studies. Meanwhile Angie CHAN Tsz-ying was awarded First Runner-up for her chunky knitwear collection ‘The Breaking Waves’. Her wool yarn collection alternated shades of blue to resemble raging waves. Hand-woven with thick and thin yarn, her works were visually rich and pleasing. Delighted with the prize, Angie said, “I personally carried out the whole process, from design, drawing, making of the pattern and weaving, so this result gives me immense satisfaction.” She received a cash prize of HK$7,000. Second Runner-up LI Sing scored with his collection entitled ‘The Knight Protector – Vol.1’ that combined the characteristics of sports and military fashion. He was inspired by sportswear of the nineties to which he added contemporary hot military and boxing designs, resulting in an outfit emphasising the male physique. Sing believed that menswear placed a premium on the use of materials, silhouette of the outfit and design details. He attributed his win to strong design complemented by the warmth, protection and durability of his garments. He received the trophy and a cash prize of HK$5,000 from VTC Deputy Executive Director, Professor Ronald CHUNG. The professional judging panel was formed by a number of renowned personalities from the industry including HKFDA Chairman Kevin YEUNG, HKFDA Vice Chairmen Janet CHEUNG and Walter MA, Creative Director of Moiselle International Limited Harris CHAN and Creative & Publishing Director of City Magazine CHING Siu-wai. Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer was organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre between 4 and 7 July (Monday to Thursday), welcoming 1,200 exhibitors from 16 countries and regions. During its first three days a series of shows were staged, including the THEi Fashion Show, showcasing the work of tertiary design students from Hong Kong and Macao as well as the creations of established industry designers.
