Students of the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) and the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), member institutions of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), emerged with flying colours at the 33rd Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition, sweeping the Champion, First and Second Runners-up awards of the Student Group. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Competition adopted the theme of Love and Sharing for the Student Group.
LEE Cheuk-chung, current HKDI graduate of the Higher Diploma in Product Design (Timepiece and Lifestyle Product) won the championship with his timepiece "Image", inspired by a deep interest in photography. Taking a leaf out of old school cameras, his design reflects the close relationship between photography and time. Cheuk-chung' s work contains a lot of ideas drawn from cameras, such as the replaceable watch movement inspired by the digital single-lens reflex camera that uses different lenses. The layered watch case mirrors the appearance of a lens. The judges found the design concept commendable, which was able to take into account the design idea, practicality and ease of production. Mass production is feasible. Cheuk-chung attributed his win to the patient coaching by HKDI teachers which enabled him to grasp three-dimensional drawing skills and conceive the idea for the exquisite timepiece and package box. Awarded a cash prize of HK$15,000, he will also attend BASELWORLD to be held in Basel, Switzerland next year, to learn more about the global industry development.
THEi Year Four student of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design, FAN Hiu-ching, was awarded First Runner-up place on the strength of her work "On The Dot", designed with an extra "faster minute hand", which runs more quickly than the other minute hand, reminding users that time really does fly. The extra minute hand is sharp in colour so busy users can easily see it. The timepiece design is sleek and pleasing, highlighting the message to make time to cherish your family, friends and lover. Hiu-ching was awarded a cash prize of HK$8,000.
Another current HKDI graduate of the Higher Diploma in Product Design (Timepiece and Lifestyle Product), WONG Lik, whose work "Ton Up 3" was inspired by the Café Racer culture of the UK, went away with the Second Runner-up place. He drew his inspiration from a group of UK motorcycle fans who challenged each other to three-minute races between cafés. Based on this idea, Lik added a timer on the surface of the timepiece that counts up to three minutes, tying in with his racer theme as well as a reminder to treasure and spend time wisely. He is now a timepiece designer at a local company, achieving his ambitions. He was awarded a cash prize of HK$5,000.
Finally two Merit Awards of the Student Group went to THEi Year Four student of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design, YIU Yu-yin and current HKDI graduate of the Higher Diploma in Product Design (Timepiece and Lifestyle Product), LEUNG Kai-hay for their works "Zoom" and "24" respectively.
Organised by the HKTDC, the 33rd Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition was divided into Open and Student Groups with a view to helping the industry discover new talents, and serving as a platform for young designers to showcase their works. Close to 150 entries were received this year. Student Group contestants came from local tertiary institutes. The winning entries will be displayed between 6 and 10 September at the HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair in the lobby of Hall 1B at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
