    About Us

The Department has been offering high-quality technician diploma, certificate and craft programmes in electrical engineering since the establishment of Haking Wong campus in 1977. In academic year (AY) 2004/2005, the Department extended the programmes to Higher Diploma level of which the Electrical Engineering programme was offered. In September AY 2016/2017, the Department also offered the Higher Diploma in Computer Engineering which was later replaced by the Higher Diploma in Computer and Electronic Engineering in September AY 2019-2020.

In AY2008/2009, the department jointly organised a two awards three-year full-time Higher Diploma in Electrical Services Engineering programme with the Shenzhen Polytechnic. Graduates will be awarded the Higher Diploma by IVE, and also be awarded the Diploma in Vocational Training by the Shenzhen Polytechnic. The Diploma in Vocational Training is a nationally recognized higher education qualification in Mainland China.

In AY 2012/2013, following the education reforms in Hong Kong, the new Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Qualification Framework Level 4) programme for the graduates of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) was launched. The full-time Higher Diploma is a 2-year 5-semester programme. Apart from the main stream, an Electrical Services Stream (2-year two awards) in cooperation with Shenzhen Polytechnic is provided as an option. Graduates of the Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering – Electrical Services Stream would be awarded the “Diploma in Vocational Training (Electrical Automation Technology)” by the Shenzhen Polytechnic as well.

In AY 2016/2017, the department first offered the Higher Diploma in Computer Engineering (Qualification Framework Level 4) and then the Higher Diploma in Computer and Electronic Engineering for the graduates of HKDSE to support the rapid development of Information Communications Technology (ICT) in Hong Kong and the latest development of Smart City Blueprint and Internet-of-things (IoT). In addition, in response to the continuous growing manpower demand in the Electrical and Mechanical (E&M) engineering industries, the Diploma in Engineering (Electrical) (Qualification Framework Level 3) programme was launched in collaboration with industry partners to provide dual-track vocational education and workplace integrated training to S3 to S6 school-leavers who have newly joined the workforce of the engineering industries and aspire to a career in Electrical Engineering.

The department also offers the Diploma of Foundation Studies (Engineering) – an engineering programme to HKDSE graduates not qualified for admission to Higher Diploma programmes. The objectives of the Diploma of Foundation Studies (Engineering) programme are to strengthen students’ academic foundation and to enable them to further studies in Higher Diploma programmes after graduation.
