The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2018 has commenced. The formal Opening Ceremony will be held on 22 June (Friday) in the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), a member institution of the Vocatonal Training Council (VTC). In the course of the tournament, the public are welcome to observe at close range different competitions, including 3D Digital Game Art, Visual Merchandising and Jewellery, to experience in person the excitement of the young competitors. Winners of the competition will have the chance to represent Hong Kong in the WorldSkills Competition to be held in Russia next year.

This year, competitors are to compete in 25 trades divided into six competition categories, namely Construction and Building Technology, Creative Arts and Fashion, Information and Communication Technology, Manufacturing and Engineering Technology, Social and Personal Services as well as Transportation and Logistics, in which around 600 of the elite of young industry tradesmen enrolled. Outstanding entrants may be selected to represent Hong Kong in the biennial Guangzhou/Hong Kong/Macao/Chengdu Youth Skills Competition and the WorldSkills Competition - hailed as the Skills Olympics – to be held in Kazan, Russia.

Two trades, Cloud Computing and 3D Digital Game Art, are added this year in view of emerging demands for new skills. For Cloud Computing, competitors will be given technical requirements for daily project deliverables where they will need to architect and provide the cloud infrastructure and services necessary to meet project goals. These include designing, maintaining the network, and resolving problems in relation to the Cloud. Regarding 3D Digital Game Art, competitors are required to perform various skills including interpretation of the game design brief, 3D modelling, texturing and game animation. 3D game works with elements like characterisation and motions will be produced.

Members of the public are welcome to come and watch the competitions to experience in person the enthusiasm and passion for vocational skills as displayed by the young local competitors. (Please refer to Annex 1 & 2 for details.)

Jointly organised biennially by the VTC, the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and the Clothing Industry Training Authority (CITA), the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition provides a platform for people aged 21 or below to compare notes and advance their professional skills as well as encouraging them to excel themselves and contribute to society.

The biennial WorldSkills Competition is a global skills event. The last competition, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates last October, saw around 1,300 young professionals from close to 60 countries and regions participating, with competitors from Hong Kong winning a Bronze award in the Beauty Therapy trade competition and seven Medallions for Excellence. Since first participating in 1997, Hong Kong teams have won two Golds, one Silver, five Bronze and 46 Medallions for Excellence, attesting to the world-class standard of Hong Kong competitors.
