Accounting students of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), a member institution of the Vocational Training Council (VTC), beat around 170 teams from 14 tertiary institutes to net the highest number of awards at the recent Accounting and Business Management Case Competition, organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Accredited Accounting Technicians (HKIAAT).

For the competition, participating teams were required to submit a written proposal analysing the business performance of mega retailer International Housewares Retail Co (mother company of Japan Home Centre), and provide strategy recommendations for its sustainable growth. Two teams from IVE (Kwun Tong) were shortlisted for the final of the competition to give an oral presentation to a panel of judges made up from the retailer, universities and HKIAAT.

Their thorough analysis, rigorous plans and outstanding presentations won them the championship and second runner-up titles, with both teams additionally achieving Best Business Proposal (the adjudication panel gave them the same score) and team member CHU Wing-yin awarded Best Presenter.

The championship winning team selected the Japanese cartoon character Ms Tachibana as the campaign icon to bring out a sense of love and family, a message resonating with the image of the retailer. On the day of the competition, the team interacted with the judges and drew up the picture of Ms Tachibana at the same time to bridge the distance between judges and the audience. Meanwhile the second runner-up team suggested installing a vending machine at MTR stations to offer daily necessities to busy Hong Kong people. The team even created a life-size vending machine which was showcased on the day of the competition to complement the one-scene drama staged, which deeply impressed the judges.

In addition, four teams of Higher Diploma in Accountancy from various campuses of IVE including Chai Wan, Kwai Chung and Kwun Tong were among the Outstanding Performance Teams and another two teams of Higher Diploma in Accountancy from IVE got the awards of Proficiency Team awards.

The HKIAAT Accounting and Business Management Case Competition is organised with a view to enabling tertiary students to apply their knowledge in accountancy, financial budgeting, statistics and marketing. Students from IVE have won many prizes in the competition throughout the years.

The Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) is a member of the VTC Group. The nine IVE campuses are located across the territory. Together they provide vocational education for secondary graduates as well as people in employment. IVE courses leading to the award of higher diploma and Diploma of Foundation Studies cover various academic disciplines including Applied Science; Business Administration; Childcare, Elderly and Community Services; Design; Information Technology; Engineering; as well as Hotel, Service and Tourism Studies.
