VTC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus presents
“From Russia with Love” Annual Concert
to touch the heart of music fans

The Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the Vocational Training Council (VTC) presented the Annual Concert with the theme “From Russia with Love” in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall last Sunday (25 November). Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Dr Henry SHEK, the ensemble performed a variety of Russian classics to the applause of the audience.

The curtain raiser “Themes from James Bond 007 Movie” has been re-arranged by Dr Shek who grouped together four pieces of music excerpted from scores of the movie series, including the signature eponymous theme song from the movie “From Russia with Love” that sets the mode and style of music arrangements of the Bond movies. Already familiar with the piece, a lot of music fans of the Concert were totally immersed in the romantic and passionate melody.

Another highlight was Shakespeare’s famous play “Romeo and Juliet” which has inspired many musicians over the centuries, including the well-acclaimed ballet drama and orchestral suites adapted by Russian composer Prokofiev. The “Romeo and Juliet Suite” put out by the VTC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus told the story of the star-crossed lovers, bringing the Concert to the climax.

Themed “From Russia with Love”, the Concert presented a number of songs, such as the exotic Russian folk songs “Troika”, “Moscow Nights” and “Kalinka”. The finale of the Concert, Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, brought down the house as the orchestra perfectly conveyed its fine sensibilities and rich emotions, successfully marking the close of the Concert.

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) is committed to promoting whole person development for young people. The VTC Symphony Orchestra and VTC Chorus were established in 2005 and 2009 respectively, serving as a unique cultural platform for VTC students, alumni and staff to unleash their talents in music.

Since 2006, the internationally-acclaimed conductor, Henry SHEK, has been invited to be the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Orchestra. Under the baton of Shek, the Orchestra won favourable reviews for its performances. The Orchestra has also given performances in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Macau, in the past years. The VTC Symphony Orchestra and VTC Chorus earned the reputation as the “Music Ambassador of VTC”, and often perform in major VTC events such as the Graduation Ceremony.
