    Top Apprentices Recognised in
VTC Outstanding Apprentice Award Presentation Ceremony

The Vocational Training Council (VTC) held the Outstanding Apprentice Award Presentation Ceremony today (28 September) in   recognition of 16 apprentices for their excellent performance. The awardees come from different technical specialisms including building services engineering, railway engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering, and power engineering. They are encouraged to pursue a career on the strength of their professional knowledge and skills in industries with a keen demand for manpower.

Chairman of the VTC Apprenticeship Training Board, Edmond LAI Wing-kok, said in his opening speech, “The Apprenticeship Training Scheme has all along provided opportunities for young people to acquire specialised skills and study at the same time, in accordance with their interests and aspirations. This way, they will be buttressed by a firm foundation for a specific industry to contribute to society in the future.” He went on to say that the VTC Earn & Learn Scheme had been regularised last year and extended to more industries. Over 300 enterprises and some 5,700 trainees have participated in the Scheme since its inception. And the related Pilot Incentive Scheme to Employers will cover more study programmes this year. It is hoped that more industries will actively take part to benefit different professions and more young people.

Nominated by employers, all the awarded outstanding apprentices made their way to success after rounds of interviews. Among them, LAM Ching-fai is currently a Quantity Surveying Technician with China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited. He joined the Apprenticeship Training Scheme with his twin brother in 2017. The pair helped each other out in work and training, while taking the Higher Diploma in Building Studies programme at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE). During the apprenticeship training, Ching-fai had the opportunity to take part in the Sky Bridge construction project of the Hong Kong International Airport for connecting Terminal 1 with the North Satellite Concourse. The project will enable passengers to walk conveniently between the two buildings and they will no longer need to be shuttled by bus.

Ching-fai said, “It gives me enormous satisfaction to see the project materialise over time, with everything starting from a design on the drawing board.” Looking forward to participating in more and more representative construction projects that benefit society, Ching-fai is now studying a top-up degree programme related to construction management offered by the School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE) in collaboration with RMIT University of Australia, on track for his career goal of becoming a professionally qualified surveyor.

Another awardee, TUNG Lap-chun, previously obtained a bachelor’s degree with the physics department of a local university. Aspiring to a career in the engineering industry, he was determined to join the Apprenticeship Training Scheme as a Construction Technician with Build King Civil Engineering Limited. During the apprenticeship training, Lap-chun enrolled in the Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering programme with IVE. Upon completion of the programme, he continues to work with Build King and has the opportunity to take part in the construction works of the at-grade road section of the Cross Bay Link project in Tseung Kwan O. The Link is being constructed to relieve the traffic congestion within TKO town centre. Lap-chun plans to accumulate more industry experience before taking the qualifying examination for registered civil engineers. Looking ahead, he would like to serve the community with his professional knowledge and skills in engineering.

Meanwhile LEE Ki-yan, Secondary Technician with CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, is also an awardee. He joined the Apprenticeship Training Scheme after completing Secondary Three. While receiving on-the-job training with CLP, he also studied in the Diploma of Vocational Education (Electrical Engineering) programme at Youth College. Ki-yan stayed on with CLP upon completion of his apprenticeship training. He is currently responsible for installation and jointing works of high voltage cables as well as emergency repairs to maintain the smooth running of the community by ensuring a safe and reliable power supply. During the apprenticeship, Ki-yan took part in a number of architectural and infrastructural projects, including the electricity supply works of Lung Shan Tunnel, the longest road tunnel in Hong Kong.

Jointing of cables requires professionalism and prudence as well as risk assessment of the surrounding environment. A thorough understanding of the jointing and handling methods of different types of cables is also required. Ki-yan goes about all these to develop the relevant knowledge and skills with commitment and perseverance. His conscientious and professional attitude earns him the commendation of supervisors and recognition of colleagues. Aspiring to be an electrical engineer, he plans to take related higher diploma and degree programmes in the future.

This year, around 250 registered apprentices were nominated by employers for the Outstanding Apprentice Award Scheme, of whom the judging panel selected 12 to receive the Outstanding Apprentice Awards and four to obtain Sir Edward Youde Memorial Outstanding Apprentice Awards. Among them, some are trainees of the VTC Earn & Learn Scheme. To broaden their horizons, a study and exchange tour to overseas education institutes and enterprises will be arranged for the 12 winners of Outstanding Apprentice Awards.
