Technical Support Unit (TSU) manages over 80 design workshops and laboratories including the following five clusters: Apparel, Audio & Visual, Graphics, Model and Multimedia Technology. A wide range of state-of-the art equipment and trade-specific facilities are provided to facilitate students’ learning, build up design experience and stimulate their creativity. All the equipment, hardware and software are kept abreast of the latest technological development in the design industry giving students a first-hand experience of the current technologies. TSU offers unlimited opportunities for students to acquire knowledge, attain design skills, perform experiment, and search for new design concepts in the Unit.

    Descriptions of five clusters:

    1. Apparel Cluster
The Apparel Cluster is equipped with fashion-related equipment and facilities. In the Fashion Archive, a Computerized Rotary Archive System together with a Magic Mirror and Smart Shelves with RFID stores and manages over 1,300 clothing and design labels. This Cluster also offers specialist laboratories, make-up and hair salons, design and textile studios as well as technical and manufacturing workshops to facilitate learning and teaching in a practical work-based context. This setup provides an excellent environment for students to develop their strengths in fashion design.

    2. Audio & Visual Cluster
Advanced software and hardware ranging from camera-shooting devices, post-production technologies to screening equipment are installed in the AV Cluster. A 9M-height TV studio provides a professional set for students to master the workflow of real TV programme recording environment. In addition, the Michael Kao Digital Animation Centre is a purpose-built centre which supports the development of digital animation.

    3. Graphics Cluster
The Graphics Cluster comprises of a photographic studio, packaging studio, dark room, printing lab, printmaking studio and drawing studio. It also provides technical support for image digitalising, colour outputting and image reproduction with an emphasis on providing a one-stop graphic production support facility for the creative and visual arts.

    4. Model Cluster
The Model Cluster is established to cater for the mastery of modeling skills. It provides a wide range of technical support from traditional workshops, including wood, metal, furniture, jewellery and plastic to advanced technologies such as laser welding, laser cutting, CNC machining, rapid prototyping and 3D modeling studio. In the Rapid Prototyping Workshop, high end equipment such as3-Axis Machining Centre, 3+1 Axis Subtractive RP, RP 3D Printer are installed serving for the purpose of teaching technology on various types of rapid prototyping including FDM, STL, inkjet and photo-polymer. In the Total Modeling Studio, students are exposed to various types of CAD software& 3D scanner which can provide them the knowledge of updated design technology. Combined with traditional skills and advanced technologies, design processes from concept, mockup, development and prototype can meet the market needs.

    5. Multimedia Technology Cluster
Well-equipped with advanced multimedia and entertainment technologies, the Multimedia Technology Cluster offers a quality teaching and learning environment. The sophisticated industrial equipment installed in this Cluster provides students with hands-on experience in multimedia design & production, multimedia advertising, computer graphics, audio-visual entertainment technology, game design together with interactive exhibition design and interactive web application and development. In the Game Visualisation Centre, there is an immersive visualization system consisting of a large hemispherical display with a realistic computer-generated 3D environment to enhance students’ knowledge in game design and development.
