The Vocational Training Council (VTC) held the presentation ceremony of the Dr Ng Tat-lun Memorial Outstanding Students Award Scheme today (26 June) to recognise the outstanding performance of 9 VTC students.

VTC Deputy Chairman and Founder of the Bright Future Charitable Foundation Dr Roy CHUNG also contributed to the Award Scheme out of the Foundation. At the presentation ceremony, Dr Chung said, “VTC has all along been committed to providing comprehensive vocational education and training. Apart from teaching professional knowledge and the right values, we also actively arrange opportunities for exchanges and learning with a view to enhancing and equipping our students with the professional skill sets necessary for their career in the new age. It is hoped that the outstanding achievements of students are recognised through the Award Scheme, and the past awardees would take forward spirit of the Scheme to set a good role of achieving and excel for their peers.”

This year 9 students from different disciplines, who excelled in the areas of academic studies, extracurricular activities and community service (See appendix for the awardee list), were each awarded a scholarship of HK$10,000.

While The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) epidemic continues, student of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) LO Ka-ki, who is studying the Higher Diploma in Biotechnology programme, participated in the research project on MERS undertaken by the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong to track the source of the pathogen during her attachment. The experience then affirmed her to pursue study on pathology and epidemics. Ka-ki has already been offered a university place and she hopes to contribute to society through professional knowledge and know-how.

LI Wai-lok, student of the IVE Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering programme, took part in engineering work on the Sub-sea Tunnel Section of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge during her attachment. Her post as assistant to engineer meant that she had to brave the rain and scorching sunlight to inspect the site in person. She participated in geological and soil stabilising work and prepared the progress report of engineering projects. Her conscientiousness in study and work earned offers from several UK and local universities. Wai-lok plans for further studies to forge a career as engineer.

KWAN Man-ying, another IVE student of the Higher Diploma in Corporate Administration programme, recalled her decision to pass up the double-major university place in the Mainland for IVE back then. Since her senior secondary years, she has developed a passion for commerce and law. Upon graduation from the secondary school, Man-ying took up the IVE programme in corporate administration, which provided a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical know-how. She has been granted a number of scholarships and is recently offered a university place. She is committed to obtaining a professional qualification and hopes to become a company secretary of multinational enterprises.
