Secretary for Innovation and Technology, HKSAR, Nicholas YANG, has personally congratulated Information Technology students of Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), a VTC member institution, who clinched the highest number of awards among all participating Hong Kong tertiary institutions at the recent Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards 2015 held in Sri Lanka.

Mr Yang met the IVE teams today (10 December), following their outstanding achievement in coming through against 25 other entrants from Asia to win Merit prizes in the Tertiary Student Project Category.

Students WONG Ka-lok, Gloria LAU, CHAN Kong-sing and Roy LAU of the Higher Diploma in Cloud and Data Centre Administration programme of IVE (Lee Wai Lee) developed the winning work ‘Marking Accelerator’, while Catherine CHOW, FONG Ka-sin, LAM Wing-yi, and Rebekah LEE of the Higher Diploma in Software Engineering programme won the prize with their work ‘Smart Schoolbag’. Part of the winning team joined a gathering hosted by Mr Yang in the company of Government Chief Information Officer Allen YEUNG at Chief Government Office today to share their winning experience.

In April this year, the two teams received the Best Student Invention Award (Tertiary and Post-graduate) Gold and Bronze prizes respectively in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2014 and hence were eligible to enter the APICTA Awards regional competition, representing Hong Kong. Again IVE teams won awards, testifying to their excellence.

The innovative work, Marking Accelerator, developed by IVE Higher Diploma in Cloud and Data Centre Administration students, is a management system that improves teachers’ handling of time-consuming and repetitive tasks such as proofreading and data entry. Making use of iCloud technology and Big Data Services research, the system can re-arrange the order of marking sequences and allow teachers to mark same-subject questions simultaneously. It can also summarise similar answers from students, enabling teachers to identify plagiarism. Scheduled for roll-out early next year, the trial version of the system will be promoted to secondary and primary school for teachers to use with a view to permanently introducing the concept and enhancing teaching efficiency.

Meanwhile “Smart Schoolbag” is the innovative work of a team of students from IVE Higher Diploma in Software Engineering programme. A tablet is installed in the schoolbag, which offers the function of automatic verification, reminder and location tracking. Smart Schoolbag can check if children have packed all textbooks in accordance with their timetables. Parents can locate their children by the real time global location system and the strap-mounted camera.
