    Hong Kong will have the largest ever team and participate in the highest number of trades yet at “Skills Olympics”, the 43rd WorldSkills Competition, to be held in São Paulo, Brazil, from 11 to 16 August, 2015.    

    The Hong Kong Team will be represented in the most trades since first joining the Worldskills Competition in 1997, with pâtisserie & confectionery and joinery as new trades. Competing with young talents from around the globe, 18 Hong Kong skilled young Hong Kong competitors will take part in 16 competition trades: pâtisserie & confectionery, joinery, beauty therapy, electrical installations, graphic design technology, hairdressing, information network cabling, IT software solutions for business, mechatronics, mobile robotics, painting & decorating, plumbing & heating, restaurant service, visual merchandising and window dressing, wall & floor tiling and web design.
     
    The Hong Kong competitors are prize winners of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2014, jointly organised by the Vocational Training Council (VTC), the Construction Industry Council and the Clothing Industry Training Authority, and selected by experts for the WorldSkills Competition. The Hong Kong Team is undergoing active trainings to excel and perform at the competition.        
     
    Organised by the WorldSkills International, the WorldSkills Competition is a prestigious international event that promotes professional expertise and skills to raise awareness of vocational education and training in the international community. This year the WorldSkills Competition has attracted some 1,200 young talents from over 60 countries and regions to compete in 50 competition trades.
     
    Inaugurated in 1950, the WorldSkills Competition is held biennially. Since first participating in 1997, the Hong Kong Team has won 2 Gold, one Silver, 4 Bronze and 32 Medallions for Excellence, showcasing the internationally-benchmarked skill levels of its young talents.

    Hong Kong Team Participating Trades
     
      Trade Description
    1 Pâtisserie and Confectionery Competitors will be required to make a variety of pastries and sweets, including marzipan, chocolates, plated desserts and entremets. During the process, competitors will be judged on quantity, variety, weight, texture, taste, theme and creativity. 
    2 Joinery Competitors will need to produce items such as wooden doors, bookshelves and ladders. They will be judged on their knowledge and understanding of technical drawings, conformity to ISO standards, as well as the finishing and appearance of their products.
    3 Beauty Therapy Competitors will need to perform facial treatments, full spa treatments, body massage, bridal and fantasy makeup, pedicure and manicure treatments. During the process they will be judged on the hygiene and safety in their working environment, professional attitude and client relationships.
    4 Electrical Installations Competitors are required to plan, install, test and commission electrical installations in a safe and professional manner. In doing so, they will be judged on their competencies and knowledge of different wiring systems, switchboards and devices. They will also need to read, interpret and revise technical drawings, as well as carrying out their tasks in a safe manner.
    5 Graphic Design Technology Competitors are judged on editorial and new media design, packaging design, corporate and information design, as well as advertising and display design. They will need to develop creative ideas while understanding the target audience of the designs.
    6 Hairdressing Competitors are judged on various aspects of hairdressing, including creativity, organisation, time management, hair analysis, hair cutting, hair colouring, hair styling, sanitation and occupational health and safety.
    7 Information Network Cabling Competitors will need to terminate and connect cables and install cable networks using different types of cables, such as twisted pairs, coaxial cables and optical fibre. In addition, the competitors will also need to install wireless networks and other network applications.
    8 IT Software Solutions for Business Competitors have to design and build a software system for a business using one of the available tools. The designs include function, database, user interface, and security and control.  Competitors will also need to present the solutions that they have developed.
    9 Mechatronics Competitors will be judged on their knowledge and abilities related to the development of mechatronic systems, industrial controllers, software programming, analytical techniques, circuit and mechanical designs.
    10 Mobile Robotics Competitors, in two-person teams, will need to programme the provided robots to carry out different sequences. In addition, they have to adjust sensors and assemble and connect peripheral equipment. In the case of hardware problems, teams must be able to handle troubleshooting and repairs on hardware and connections.
    11 Painting and Decorating The competitors will need to decorate walls and doors by applying paint, wallpaper and other decorative techniques. They will be judged on their designs, techniques, time management, efficiency and safety. 
    12 Plumbing and Heating Competitors will be required to install various plumbing and heating pipework. They are also required to repair, maintain or replace a specified plumbing or heating appliance. Work safety is also an element they will be judged on.
    13 Restaurant Service Competitors will be judged on important skills as service personnel in a restaurant, which includes the servicing of food and beverages.  In addition, they will be tested on the preparation of gueridon dishes, preparation of cocktails and identification of drinks. Their personal presentation and social skills will also be parts of the judging criterions.
    14 Visual Merchandising/
    Window Dressing
    Competitors will be required to design and install a unique window display. The installation needs to be properly planned and organised, and be produced by appropriate materials. When the installation is completed, competitors will have to present their ideas and designs to the judges.
    15 Wall and Floor Tiling Competitors will be required to produce walls and floors properly tiled by using materials provided.  They will also be expected to produce complex figures and corners in their projects. In addition to their tiling skills, competitors are also judged on safe working practices, interpretation of building information and technical drawings.
    16 Web Design Competitors will be required to design and programme a website.  They may be provided with parts of a website such as a completed database or a completed user interface, and build a fully functional website in accordance to its purposes.
