The Insurance Training Board and the Institute of Professional Education And Knowledge (PEAK) under the Vocational Training Council (VTC) co-organised a first-ever Insurance Summit yesterday (31 August) in Dynasty Club Wan Chai, attended by over 300 insurance and banking professionals. Distinguished speakers including Chairperson of the Competition Commission Anna WU Hung-yuk, Chairman of the Independent Insurance Authority (IIA) Dr Moses CHENG Mo-chi and Commissioner for Innovation and Technology Annie CHOI discussed current legislation, regulatory issues and market changes in the insurance industry.

In his welcome speech, VTC Chairman Clement CHEN spoke of the Council’s commitment to nurturing a quality workforce to support the growth of the insurance industry. Over the years, he said, PEAK had been providing the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme and professional examination services in various areas to enhance the professional knowledge and services of industry practitioners. More recently, with Government funding, VTC had launched a three-year pilot programme to enhance promotion and training for the insurance sector. This pilot programme would promote and raise the professional image of the insurance sector, enhance the professional competence of practitioners and attract new talent to the industry.

With a view to familiarising practitioners with the new Competition Ordinance, which came into effect in December last year, Chairperson of the Competition Commission Ms Wu analysed the opportunities generated by the Ordinance for the insurance industry. Chairman of the IIA Dr Cheng explained his Authority’s role as a sustainable development partner of the industry, for which the supervision was being strengthened from a self-regulatory system to a statutory licensing regime for insurance intermediaries. With financial technology developing fast, he said, financial institutions had long placed a premium on optimising services and opening up new business opportunities. Commissioner for Innovation and Technology Ms Choi highlighted the convenience and efficiency brought by innovations in financial technology and their application.

Most of the attendees were insurance and banking professionals, who showed great enthusiasm for the topics discussed and contributed to a lively Q&A section. Much positive feedback was also received from the participants, who said they found the Summit contents useful and informative, and hoped the VTC Insurance Training Board and PEAK would organise similar events in the future.

The Institute of Professional Education And Knowledge (PEAK) is a member of VTC Group.
