Contestants from four cities compete at Guangzhou/Hong Kong/Macao/Chengdu Youth Skills Competition 2016
16 competitors from various member institutions of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) including the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and Youth College (For the list of Hong Kong competitors, please refer to the Annex.) will take part in the Guangzhou/Hong Kong/Macao/Chengdu (GHMC) Youth Skills Competition 2016 in Guangzhou on 19 October (Wednesday). The competitors will compete in five trades, namely Beauty Therapy, Information Network Cabling, Mobile Robotics, Web Design, and Visual Merchandising/Window Dressing, against competitors from Guangzhou, Macao and Chengdu. The competition offers youngsters an opportunity to compare notes with their peers and exchange knowledge. The Mobile Robotics contest requires competitors to develop computer programmes that instruct a robot to pick up, move, and place parcels within specified time, in the course of which all the actions should be automated without any manual handling. LEUNG Ka-ching, a Year Two student of the Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering at IVE, has absorbed experience from her predecessors in co-developing a robot with her team members and teachers that uses built-in barcodes. By measuring the number of wheel turns and making use of ultrasound technology, she has been able to enhance the precision of the robot's movements. The team has also adopted 3D printing technology to replace some parts of the metal machine, which reduces the number of joints between different parts and the weight of the robot enhancing the flexibility. As the competition draws near, Ka-ching has been stepping up her preparations for better control of the robot. At weekends, she spent as many as 12 hours daily to develop better “rapport” with the robot. She believes that this would help her better manage the robot during the competition.
CHAN Suet-man, a graduate of the Higher Diploma in Software Engineering at IVE, will take part in the Web Design competition. Having little experience of information technology design before coming to IVE, Suet-man worked hard on her studies, honed her IT knowledge and skills and was rewarded by coming first at the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2016 (Web Design). She studied visual arts in secondary school and has a knack for handling graphic images and font types, which helps her to come up with easy-to-navigate and user-friendly web pages. She is also busy preparing for the GHMC Youth Skills Competition 2016 and spends at least three hours every day studying the competition requirements, such as user interface design, application of JavaScript and database design. Suet-man has even invited an IVE teacher over during weekends to coach her in weaker areas, in the hope of increasing her speed and achieving a shorter turnaround time in the competition.
Meanwhile, teachers and students of HKDI will stage workshops where visitors can appreciate innovative designs and try their hands at creating unique souvenirs. Visitors can take part in the Clay Hands with Clay Thoughts Workshop and Upcycling Fashion Accessories Workshop to view the creative pieces created by HKDI students of the Higher Diplomas in Visual Arts and Culture and Fashion Branding and Buying. Under the guidance of HKDI teachers and students, visitors can also try their hands at making different types of clay pieces or upcycling textile waste into chic accessories.
Jointly organised by the VTC, Guangzhou Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, Macao SAR Labour Affairs Bureau and Chengdu Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, the GHMC Youth Skills Competition is organised biennially in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao and Chengdu on a rotation basis. This year's ninth edition will be held at Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center. Most of the Hong Kong competitors are earlier winners of the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition, while some others are young industry talents handpicked by experts. All of them have received further training to prepare for the GHMC Youth Skills Competition.
